Silk Scroll – Early Qing 17th Century
Painted with crushed minerals and precious stones (ruby, sapphire, emerald, etc.)
Expert opinion: “Very important historic piece. First Rank Mandarin Ruler of an entire province; probably Western China. A Banner Family related to the Imperial Family. This is evidenced by the yellow draping on altar table (only Imperial Family allowed the use of the color yellow). Also notice the yellow ―coat of arms; an emblem of rank on garments. They are seated on hoop back chairs (Transitional Furniture). The scroll was painted with crushed gemstones, which were reduced to powder for painting purposes using emeralds for green, rubies for red, sapphires for blue and embellished with gold leaf. Testing and analysis support circa early Qing (17th century). Scroll is handmade, hand woven silk. The carbonization is absolutely correct and the lines on scroll further support circa.
Pigments are very luminous indicating crushed gems and precious/semi-precious minerals, is also real gold powder laid on top of sizing.
